Five years ago, asking an undergraduate student what they wanted to become usually produced familiar answers.
“I want to work in marketing.”
“I want to join a multinational.”
“I want an MBA.”
Today, the answers sound very different.
“I want to build a creator brand.”
“I want to launch something while I’m still in college.”
“I want to work with AI.”
“I don’t even know what job I’ll have in five years because it probably doesn’t exist today.”
That shift is bigger than it appears.
It tells us one thing very clearly:
The future is no longer about preparing students for existing careers. It is about preparing them for emerging problems.
And undergraduate management education must evolve accordingly.
The Biggest Career Risk Isn’t AI. It’s Predictability.
Much has been written about artificial intelligence replacing jobs.
But there is another reality that often gets ignored.
AI is exceptionally good at doing work that follows patterns.
Which means graduates who only know how to execute instructions, create presentations, prepare reports or analyse historical data will increasingly compete with machines that can perform those tasks faster and cheaper.
The value of a management graduate is therefore shifting.
Tomorrow’s leaders won’t be rewarded for knowing answers.
They will be rewarded for asking better questions.
For connecting unrelated ideas.
For making decisions under uncertainty.
For understanding people when algorithms cannot.
For spotting opportunities before markets notice them.
These are not technical skills.
These are management skills in their purest form.
Research across higher education increasingly points to experiential learning, adaptability, interdisciplinary thinking and AI literacy becoming central to undergraduate management education as employers value application over memorisation.
Most Business Problems No Longer Belong To One Department
Consider something as ordinary as launching a new food brand.
Earlier, it involved marketing, finance and operations.
Today, the same decision also involves:
consumer psychology
sustainability
AI-powered demand forecasting
data analytics
digital content
supply chain resilience
community building
regulatory compliance
Business has become deeply interdisciplinary.
Students who continue learning subjects in isolation may graduate with knowledge.
But they may struggle with complexity.
The managers of tomorrow will need to think like systems thinkers rather than department specialists.
That shift should begin during undergraduate education—not after graduation.
Students Should Build Before They Manage
One of the assumptions management education has traditionally made is simple:
First study.
Then intern.
Then work.
Then perhaps innovate.
Gen Z has quietly reversed that sequence.
Many students now prototype products, create digital businesses, build communities, monetise content and validate ideas while still pursuing their undergraduate degrees. Universities across India are responding by strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems and encouraging venture creation before graduation.
This is not simply entrepreneurship.
It is learning.
When students build something—even something small—they understand management differently.
Pricing becomes real.
Customers become real.
Failure becomes real.
Negotiation becomes real.
And confidence becomes real.
No classroom simulation can fully replicate that experience.
The New Competitive Advantage Is Learning Speed
Every generation believed knowledge created advantage.
Today’s students face a different reality.
Knowledge has become abundant.
AI can explain concepts in seconds.
Search engines retrieve information instantly.
Courses are everywhere.
The differentiator is no longer access to information.
It is the ability to learn faster than change itself.
That requires students to become comfortable with ambiguity.
To unlearn.
To experiment.
To fail quickly.
To adapt repeatedly.
These behaviours matter far more than memorising frameworks that may become obsolete within a few years.
Management Students Must Learn To Work With AI, Not Around It
There is understandable anxiety around generative AI.
Will students misuse it?
Will it reduce critical thinking?
These are valid concerns.
But avoiding AI is no longer an educational strategy.
Learning to use it responsibly is.
Recent studies in undergraduate management education show that when AI is integrated thoughtfully—with case simulations, adaptive feedback and guided learning—it can improve engagement and support deeper learning rather than replace it. The emphasis shifts from generating answers to evaluating, refining and applying them responsibly.
The question is therefore no longer:
“Should students use AI?”
The real question is:
“Can students think better than AI?”
Because that is what employers will eventually evaluate.
Undergraduate Education Should Feel More Like A Startup Than A Classroom
Imagine a campus where students routinely:
work on live business challenges instead of hypothetical assignments
collaborate with engineers, designers and psychologists
test ideas before writing reports
pitch solutions instead of memorising theories
use AI as a thinking partner—not a shortcut
interact with founders as frequently as textbooks
This is no longer an unconventional model.
It is becoming the expectation of modern business education. Institutions are redesigning undergraduate programmes around experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, global exposure and stronger industry integration to better prepare students for uncertain careers.
Why Undergraduate Years Matter More Than Ever
Many people still believe serious management education begins during an MBA.
I believe that assumption deserves to be challenged.
The undergraduate years are when curiosity is highest.
Risk-taking feels natural.
Identity is still evolving.
Students have fewer constraints.
This is precisely when experimentation should happen.
If students spend these years only preparing for placements, they may miss the opportunity to prepare for leadership.
Leadership rarely begins with authority.
It begins with curiosity.
